Biography
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear Aunt Bette Ounjian after a brief illness. Bette was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Ounjian. She was always grateful to them for choosing Canada to live in and to raise their family here.
Bette is predeceased by her beloved sister Freda Kalaidjian. Shewas adored by nephew Brian and his wife Wendy, their daughter, Bette’s great-niece Danielle (Mark), Bette’s nephew Dean and her brother-in law John. She was loved and held a special place in the hearts of her cousins and her many friends. She was an inspiration to all of those who loved and knew her, and she continued to express her hopes and concerns for others until the last days of her life. Her family is thankful for the wonderful care she received at Sunnybrook Hospital.
Bette’s gracious hospitality was appreciated by those who were blessed to have a seat at her table. Her family’s recipes were carefully and thoughtfully prepared by Bette and lovingly served to family and friends. Danielle has become one of the caretakers of these recipes which will be cherished for generations.
Bette began her working life at the Toronto Star Advertising Department, while earning her teaching certificate and B.A. at night school. Her passion for teaching was apparent in the planning of her classroom curriculum designed to challenge and inspire her young students. Bette was a lifelong teacher even after her retirement from the classroom.
Her quest to learn and share her knowledge was fulfilled through her volunteer work at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Arts where she studied and became a docent while working in the archives, and was a mentor to other docents in training. She was an integral part of the Volunteer Program conducting interesting and informative tours of visiting exhibitions and permanent collections.
Bette died quietly and at peace, saying “I’ve been blessed with a good life.”
Rest in peace, Auntie Bette.
