Biography of Mr. Barkev Khojajian provided by the family:
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, պապի, father, Grandfather, Uncle, Granduncle and Friend.
A presence at every family gathering, he will be remembered for his contagious boisterous laugh, passion and storytelling. An avid traveler and historian, he enjoyed sharing stories and educating younger generations on the family history.
He was loved and well respected in the Armenian community. Born in Deir-el-Zor, Syria in 1932, he studied at the American University of Beirut; arrived in Toronto on Thanksgiving, October 1953 and graduated from the University of Toronto as a Civil Engineer in 1957. In 1962 he married Nelly Colekessian. In 1965 they moved to Kingston, Ontario and started a family with two lovely children Raffy and Tanya.
Barkev’s coming to Canada opened up the door for the rest of the family and he was shortly joined by his mom (Serpouhi), sisters (Aline and Berjouhi) and their families.
One of the original founders of the Armenian Community in Toronto, he was incredibly proud of his Armenian roots and heritage.
  • Active at Holy Trinity Armenian and Eastern Diocese 1954-1984; Active and chairman of ACYOA for a number of years.
  • Established the “Nor Serount” newsletter in 1955.
  • Invigorated the ACYOA by evolving it from a two family group to a youth organization of 90+ members by actively seeking our Armenian youth in Toronto, welcoming them and making them feel at home. That is how he met his beloved wife Nelly.
  • Chairman of Central Council; the first and only from Canada to lead 40 chapters in Canada and Eastern USA, 1964-1965.
  • Led the first ACYOA pilgrimage to Armenia and Etchmiadzin in 1965.
  • Founded the Armenian Church Saturday School, St. Sahag and St. Mesrob 1956.
  • Served on the Parish council for 14 years and was chairman for a number of years.

Was a staunch supporter of the AGBU, its mission and initiatives and served as an Executive on various committees including the AGBU Zaroukian Armenian Day School Board.
He will be remembered for his contagious laughter, sense of humour and his extensive knowledge of history. He was passionate in all that he believed in. He will be greatly missed.
“Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might and when you laugh, laugh like hell and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. “
