THE OLD TESTAMENT
History / The
Fifth Book of Moses, called Deuteronomy /
Deuteronomy 12
12:1These
are the statutes and the ordinances which ye shall observe to do in the land
which Jehovah, the God of thy fathers, hath given thee to possess it, all the
days that ye live upon the earth. 12:2Ye shall surely destroy all
the places wherein the nations that ye shall dispossess served their gods, upon
the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree: 12:3and
ye shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and burn
their Asherim with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods;
and ye shall destroy their name out of that place. 12:4Ye shall not
do so unto Jehovah your God. 12:5But unto the place which Jehovah
your God shall choose out of all your tribes, to put his name there, even unto
his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come; 12:6and
thither ye shall bring your burnt-offerings, and your sacrifices, and your
tithes, and the heave-offering of your hand, and your vows, and your
freewill-offerings, and the firstlings of your herd and of your flock: 12:7and
there ye shall eat before Jehovah your God, and ye shall rejoice in all that ye
put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein Jehovah thy God hath
blessed thee. 12:8Ye shall not do after all the things that we do
here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes; 12:9for
ye are not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance, which Jehovah thy
God giveth thee. 12:10But when ye go over the Jordan, and dwell in
the land which Jehovah your God causeth you to inherit, and he giveth you rest
from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety; 12:11then
it shall come to pass that to the place which Jehovah your God shall choose, to
cause his name to dwell there, thither shall ye bring all that I command you:
your burnt-offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave-offering
of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto Jehovah. 12:12And
ye shall rejoice before Jehovah your God, ye, and your sons, and your
daughters, and your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and the Levite that
is within your gates, forasmuch as he hath no portion nor inheritance with you.
12:13Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt-offerings in
every place that thou seest; 12:14but in the place which Jehovah
shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt-offerings,
and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.
12:15Notwithstanding,
thou mayest kill and eat flesh within all thy gates, after all the desire of
thy soul, according to the blessing of Jehovah thy God which he hath given
thee: the unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the gazelle, and as of
the hart. 12:16Only ye shall not eat the blood; thou shalt pour it
out upon the earth as water. 12:17Thou mayest not eat within thy
gates the tithe of thy grain, or of thy new wine, or of thine oil, or the
firstlings of thy herd or of thy flock, nor any of thy vows which thou vowest,
nor thy freewill-offerings, nor the heave-offering of thy hand; 12:18but
thou shalt eat them before Jehovah thy God in the place which Jehovah thy God
shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy man-servant, and thy
maid-servant, and the Levite that is within thy gates: and thou shalt rejoice
before Jehovah thy God in all that thou puttest thy hand unto. 12:19Take
heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite as long as thou livest in thy
land.
12:20When
Jehovah thy God shall enlarge thy border, as he hath promised thee, and thou
shalt say, I will eat flesh, because thy soul desireth to eat flesh; thou
mayest eat flesh, after all the desire of thy soul. 12:21If the
place which Jehovah thy God shall choose, to put his name there, be too far
from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy herd and of thy flock, which Jehovah
hath given thee, as I have commanded thee; and thou mayest eat within thy
gates, after all the desire of thy soul. 12:22Even as the gazelle
and as the hart is eaten, so thou shalt eat thereof: the unclean and the clean
may eat thereof alike. 12:23Only be sure that thou eat not the
blood: for the blood is the life; and thou shalt not eat the life with the
flesh. 12:24Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it out upon the
earth as water. 12:25Thou shalt not eat it; that it may go well with
thee, and with thy children after thee, when thou shalt do that which is right
in the eyes of Jehovah. 12:26Only thy holy things which thou hast,
and thy vows, thou shalt take, and go unto the place which Jehovah shall
choose: 12:27and thou shalt offer thy burnt-offerings, the flesh and
the blood, upon the altar of Jehovah thy God; and the blood of thy sacrifices
shall be poured out upon the altar of Jehovah thy God; and thou shalt eat the
flesh. 12:28Observe and hear all these words which I command thee,
that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when
thou doest that which is good and right in the eyes of Jehovah thy God.
12:29When
Jehovah thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest
in to dispossess them, and thou dispossessest them, and dwellest in their land;
12:30take heed to thyself that thou be not ensnared to follow them,
after that they are destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after
their gods, saying, How do these nations serve their gods? even so will I do
likewise. 12:31Thou shalt not do so unto Jehovah thy God: for every
abomination to Jehovah, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for
even their sons and their daughters do they burn in the fire to their gods.
12:32What
thing soever I command you, that shall ye observe to do: thou shalt not add
thereto, nor diminish from it.
Deuteronomy 13
13:1If
there arise in the midst of thee a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he give
thee a sign or a wonder, 13:2and the sign or the wonder come to
pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which
thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 13:3thou shalt not
hearken unto the words of that prophet, or unto that dreamer of dreams: for
Jehovah your God proveth you, to know whether ye love Jehovah your God with all
your heart and with all your soul. 13:4Ye shall walk after Jehovah
your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye
shall serve him, and cleave unto him. 13:5And that prophet, or that
dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death, because he hath spoken rebellion
against Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and
redeemed thee out of the house of bondage, to draw thee aside out of the way
which Jehovah thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put away the
evil from the midst of thee.

Psalm 97
97:1Jehovah
reigneth; let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad. 97:2Clouds
and darkness are round about him: Righteousness and justice are the
foundation of his throne. 97:3A fire goeth before him, And
burneth up his adversaries round about. 97:4His lightnings
lightened the world: The earth saw, and trembled. 97:5The
mountains melted like wax at the presence of Jehovah, At the presence of
the Lord of the whole earth. 97:6The heavens declare his
righteousness, And all the peoples have seen his glory. 97:7Let
all them be put to shame that serve graven images, That boast themselves
of idols: Worship him, all ye gods. 97:8Zion heard and was
glad, And the daughters of Judah rejoiced, Because of thy judgments,
O Jehovah. 97:9For thou, Jehovah, art most high above all the
earth: Thou art exalted far above all gods. 97:10O ye that
love Jehovah, hate evil: He preserveth the souls of his saints; He
delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked. 97:11Light is
sown for the righteous, And gladness for the upright in heart. 97:12Be
glad in Jehovah, ye righteous; And give thanks to his holy memorial name.

Book of the Prophet Jeremiah /
Jeremiah 31
31:31Behold,
the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of
Israel, and with the house of Judah: 31:32not according to the
covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand
to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although
I was a husband unto them, saith Jehovah. 31:33But this is the
covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith
Jehovah: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I
write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: 31:34and
they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother,
saying, Know Jehovah; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto
the greatest of them, saith Jehovah: for I will forgive their iniquity, and
their sin will I remember no more. 31:35Thus saith Jehovah, who
giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the
stars for a light by night, who stirreth up the sea, so that the waves thereof
roar; Jehovah of hosts is his name: 31:36If these ordinances depart
from before me, saith Jehovah, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from
being a nation before me for ever. 31:37Thus saith Jehovah: If
heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out
beneath, then will I also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they
have done, saith Jehovah. 31:38Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah,
that the city shall be built to Jehovah from the tower of Hananel unto the gate
of the corner. 31:39And the measuring line shall go out further
straight onward unto the hill Gareb, and shall turn about unto Goah. 31:40And
the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields unto
the brook Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be
holy unto Jehovah; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for
ever.
Jeremiah 32
32:1The
word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of
Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 32:2Now at
that time the king of Babylon's army was besieging Jerusalem; and Jeremiah the
prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah's
house. 32:3For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying,
Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will give
this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 32:4and
Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but
shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak
with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; 32:5and
he shall bring Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him,
saith Jehovah: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper?

The Life
of Jesus / The
Gospel According to St. John /
John 5
5:31If
I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. 5:32It is another
that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of
me is true. 5:33Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness
unto the truth. 5:34But the witness which I receive is not from man:
howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved. 5:35He was the
lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in
his light. 5:36But the witness which I have is greater than that
of John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the
very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 5:37And
the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his
voice at any time, nor seen his form. 5:38And ye have not his word
abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not. 5:39Ye search
the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these
are they which bear witness of me; 5:40and ye will not come to me,
that ye may have life. 5:41I receive not glory from men. 5:42But
I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves. 5:43I am
come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his
own name, him ye will receive. 5:44How can ye believe, who receive
glory one of another, and the glory that cometh from the only God ye
seek not? 5:45Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there
is one that accuseth you, even Moses, on whom ye have set your hope. 5:46For
if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote of me. 5:47But
if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
John 6
6:1After
these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is the
sea of Tiberias. 6:2And a great multitude followed him, because
they beheld the signs which he did on them that were sick. 6:3And
Jesus went up into the mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. 6:4Now
the passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 6:5Jesus therefore
lifting up his eyes, and seeing that a great multitude cometh unto him, saith
unto Philip, Whence are we to buy bread, that these may eat? 6:6And
this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. 6:7Philip
answered him, Two hundred shillings' worth of bread is not sufficient for them,
that every one may take a little. 6:8One of his disciples, Andrew,
Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, 6:9There is a lad here, who
hath five barley loaves, and two fishes: but what are these among so many? 6:10Jesus
said, Make the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the
men sat down, in number about five thousand. 6:11Jesus therefore
took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to them that were set
down; likewise also of the fishes as much as they would. 6:12And
when they were filled, he saith unto his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces
which remain over, that nothing be lost. 6:13So they gathered them
up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves,
which remained over unto them that had eaten. 6:14When therefore the
people saw the sign which he did, they said, This is of a truth the prophet
that cometh into the world. 6:15Jesus therefore perceiving that they
were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into
the mountain himself alone.
