THE OLD TESTAMENT

History / The First Book of Moses, called Genesis /

Genesis 47

47:1Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen. 47:2And from among his brethren he took five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh. 47:3And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers. 47:4And they said unto Pharaoh, To sojourn in the land are we come; for there is no pasture for thy servants' flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen. 47:5And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee: 47:6the land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and thy brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any able men among them, then make them rulers over my cattle. 47:7And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 47:8And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How many are the days of the years of thy life? 47:9And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years: few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage. 47:10And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh. 47:11And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 47:12And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

47:13And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. 47:14And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house. 47:15And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for our money faileth. 47:16And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail. 47:17And they brought their cattle unto Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year. 47:18And when that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide from my lord, how that our money is all spent; and the herds of cattle are my lord's; there is nought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands: 47:19wherefore should we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land be not desolate.

47:20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine was sore upon them: and the land became Pharaoh's. 47:21And as for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of the border of Egypt even to the other end thereof. 47:22Only the land of the priests bought he not: for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them; wherefore they sold not their land. 47:23Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. 47:24And it shall come to pass at the ingatherings, that ye shall give a fifth unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones. 47:25And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants. 47:26And Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the land of the priests alone became not Pharaoh's.

47:27And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they gat them possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly. 47:28And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred forty and seven years. 47:29And the time drew near that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me: bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt; 47:30but when I sleep with my fathers, thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying-place. And he said, I will do as thou hast said. 47:31And he said, Swear unto me: and he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head.

Genesis 48

48:1And it came to pass after these things, that one said to Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 48:2And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed. 48:3And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, 48:4and said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a company of peoples, and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession. 48:5And now thy two sons, who were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, shall be mine. 48:6And thy issue, that thou begettest after them, shall be thine; they shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance. 48:7And as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when there was still some distance to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way to Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem).

Psalm 26

A Psalm of David. 26:1Judge me, O Jehovah, for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in Jehovah without wavering. 26:2Examine me, O Jehovah, and prove me; Try my heart and my mind. 26:3For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes; And I have walked in thy truth. 26:4I have not sat with men of falsehood; Neither will I go in with dissemblers. 26:5I hate the assembly of evil-doers, And will not sit with the wicked. 26:6I will wash my hands in innocency: So will I compass thine altar, O Jehovah; 26:7That I may make the voice of thanksgiving to be heard, And tell of all thy wondrous works. 26:8Jehovah, I love the habitation of thy house, And the place where thy glory dwelleth. 26:9Gather not my soul with sinners, Nor my life with men of blood; 26:10In whose hands is wickedness, And their right hand is full of bribes. 26:11But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: Redeem me, and be merciful unto me. 26:12My foot standeth in an even place: In the congregations will I bless Jehovah.

Isaiah 29

29:13And the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw nigh unto me, and with their mouth and with their lips to honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which hath been taught them; 29:14therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. 29:15Woe unto them that hide deep their counsel from Jehovah, and whose works are in the dark, and that say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? 29:16Ye turn things upside down! Shall the potter be esteemed as clay; that the thing made should say of him that made it, He made me not; or the thing formed say of him that formed it, He hath no understanding? 29:17Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest? 29:18And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness. 29:19The meek also shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 29:20For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scoffer ceaseth, and all they that watch for iniquity are cut off; 29:21that make a man an offender in his cause, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just with a thing of nought. 29:22Therefore thus saith Jehovah, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale. 29:23But when he seeth his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name; yea, they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall stand in awe of the God of Israel. 29:24They also that err in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmur shall receive instruction.

THE NEW TESTAMENT

The Life of Jesus / The Gospel According to St. Matthew /

Matthew 23

23:37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 23:38Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. 23:39For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Matthew 24

24:1And Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way; and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple. 24:2But he answered and said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

24:3And as he sat on the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 24:4And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray. 24:5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray. 24:6And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for these things must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet. 24:7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places. 24:8But all these things are the beginning of travail. 24:9Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name's sake. 24:10And then shall many stumble, and shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another. 24:11And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray. 24:12And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold. 24:13But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. 24:14And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.
