ACYOC Ski Trips to Blue Mountain

Talin Orfali

The Armenian Church Youth Organization of Canada has been organizing ski trips for their Senior and Junior members for years.  This is considered one of the most exciting events of the group and every year more people join in to spend couple of days enjoying the great outdoor activities in one of the best places that Ontario has to offer.

In February & March 2010, the Seniors’ group led by Garen Hagopian, and the Juniors’ group led by Nareg Zargarian, had weekends away, starting by gathering at Holy Trinity Armenian Church.

ski trip 2010.jpg

Following a prayer in the evening and receiving Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian’s good wishes and advice, the groups settled in their buses and were on their way to Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood.

Youth representatives from Montreal also attended the Senior ACYOC group’s trip in February.  We spent the days skiing, snowboarding, eating beavertails, going to the village, shopping, swimming in an outdoor warm pool, listening to music, playing cards, cooking and having meals together.  But most of all we enjoyed each others company, strengthened our friendships and made new friends.

The main focus of ACYOC is to connect Armenian youth together, and organize events that we will talk about for years to come and creating everlasting memories.  We hope to see more youth joining us in ski trips and other events in the years to come.

ACYOC Retreat - March 26, 2009 Minimize

Bringing Armenian youth together is, and always has been, the focus of the ACYOC.
After the elections in late November, our newly formed committee felt that it was absolutely crucial that we hold more religious based events, so that our youth can have a better understanding of Christianity and what it means to live a Christian lifestyle.  The March 27th ACYOC sleepover was just that: an event where our youth gathered together under one roof and had deep, meaningful discussions about God with their religious leaders.  We were joined by Rev Archpriest Fr. Zareh Zargarian, His Eminence Bishop Bagrat Galstanian and guest speaker Peter Nigoghossian who gave his testimony and sparked much discussion with the youth. Our own Ari Boyaci also gave an insightful presentation on the role of Lent in the Armenian Apostolic Church; a lot of valuable information was extracted from these discussions. This was followed by a question period, where our youth were given the opportunity to ask faith related questions and receive answers. To leave a true spiritual imprint on the youth, they were escorted upstairs into the church to participate in an “Arevakal” service, which really ended the formal programme off with a sentimental tone.  The event was very successful, and we look forward to having another sleepover very soon!

Palm Sunday - April 5, 2009 Minimize

On April 5th, 2009, both Junior and Senior A.C.Y.O.C took part in the annual Palm Sunday Luncheon.

During the Divine Liturgy the new Junior and Senior committees were blessed by Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian and then everyone was invited to join in on the festivities downstairs.

The ACYOC members worked hard in decorating the hall and preparing the food. The afternoon entertainment consisted of the Holy Trinity “Yeraz Choir” and “Sasoon Dance Ensemble,” performances by Khatchig and Saro Wanes on piano and duduk and by Gary on the accordion accompanied by Sevag Avakian.

S-IMG_0305.jpg

Overall, this event was a huge success as the hall was at capacity, and volunteers who performed did a great job and kept the parishioners wanting for more. It is our pleasure to hold this event as it has been tradition and we look forward to it every year.

A.C.Y.O.C. (Armenian Church Youth Organization of Canada) was originally organized in 1954 as the Armenian Church Youth Organization of America and it remained so until 1980, when it became A.C.Y.O. of Canada with the establishment of the Armenian Diocese in Canada.
Since its inception A.C.Y.O.C. has evolved to meet the needs of an ever-changing youth culture, yet it has stayed true to its founding principals.

ACYOC Logo-1.jpg

Ours is an organization dedicated to fostering and developing a sense of community pride among young Armenian-Canadian men and women. Through a variety of engaging social and cultural activities, we promote youth leadership within both the Armenian community and the greater community of Toronto. We are the youth of today and the leaders of tomorrow; we are the inheritors of an Armenian legacy and the architects of an Armenian destiny.

A.C.Y.O.C. Elections

On Friday November 28, 2008 the Armenian Church Youth Organization of Canada – Toronto Chapter conducted its general election of Executive Committee members for the upcoming 2009 calendar year. The meeting was led by Rev. Fr. Zareh Zargarian and by ACYOC’s parish council liaison Sibil Kurkjian, and attended by around 25 ACYOC members.

Discussions for the meeting began with talking about some of the future projects or events that the youth would like to see implemented for this upcoming year. There was a consensus that more religion based activities and events be organized to plant the seeds of our Christian faith within the youth of ACYOC and having them become inspired and motivated in coming to church and learning more about our beliefs.

The meeting was then split up between the Senior and Junior groups. Each candidate running for a position made a brief speech about what ACYOC means to them and how they feel they that can contribute to the team. After all candidates having their turns in speaking, six JR ACYOC and nine SR ACYOC members were elected to executive council.          With a change in executive membership and a new, stronger leadership, the meeting had concluded on a very positive note with the belief that this upcoming year will become a very successful one for the youth of this parish.

It is with hope that this newer, more powerful committee will relentlessly serve this church and much success will be visible in the near and upcoming future.

Both the Junior and Senior A.C.Y.O.C Ski trips of 2008 were very successful, filled with unforgettable memories. This year, with both trips combined, about 60-65 Armenian youth between the ages of 14-25 attended. A.C.Y.O.C has made it a tradition to hold this memorable event every year. The trips include a two-night stay in a chalet in Tyrolean Village where the youth are able to create new friends and have a fantastic time. The outdoor skiing and snowboarding gave everyone plenty of memories and laughs that they will remember for a lifetime. Everyone used the weekend to relax and get away before returning to their busy lives at home.

By the time Sunday rolled around nobody wanted to leave, we all became one great big Armenian family. The purpose of having the ski trips was to unite Armenian youth and create everlasting memories and friendships. Many thanks go the Holy Trinity Armenian Church for their support, the Jr. and Sr. A.C.Y.O.C committees for their hard work, dedication and passion, and to all the youth who attended. Without these factors, the trips would not have been as successful as they were. We hope to see you all next year, and many more to join us!

ACYOC BAKE SALE

On Sunday, July 15, Junior and Senior members of ACYOC held their first fundraising Bake Sale of the season; single-serving baked goods (cookies, bars, brownies, samosas, beuregs, etc.) were offered after Divine Liturgy by the Toronto Holy Trinity chapters of ACYOC.

The sale was a big success!  With such a great response, ACYOC is planning to have a bake sale every month, Sundays after Badarak.  Please make every attempt to attend and lend support to your youth.

Palm Sunday Luncheon Organized by ACYOC - April 1, 2007

The annual Palm Sunday luncheon hosted by the Jr. and Sr. ACYOC committees was an overall huge success. On Sunday, the 1st of April, many faithful guests attended the traditional luncheon after mass, where they could enjoy a delicious meal and entertainment—all prepared by the youth.

Some of the highlights of the luncheon included the fresh—and surprisingly tasty—Atlantic Salmon, compelling presentations by CYMA representatives and Khajag Avakian, excellent piano-playing by Armin Schmittat and family, an elegant Armenian dance by Shogher Menenguichian, accordion and drum playing by Gary and Sevag Avakian and a heartfelt speech by our own Talin Orfali.  read more...    see photos

Ski Trip to Blue Mountain - March 2007

A relaxing weekend in the picturesque haven of the Blue Mountains with all your friends was the best way to alleviate all the everyday stress caused by school and especially, parents. It is safe to say that the 2007 ACYOC Ski Trips were very successful, completely filled with fun and memories of a lifetime.

It has been ACYOC tradition to plan and promote such an exciting event every year. It is the ultimate goal of ACYOC to bring Armenian youth together and to promote their involvement in the community; this event was just another means of reaching that goal.

This year, with the two trips combined, 60 youth between the ages of 14 and 25 were able to participate. The trips included a two-night stay in a Tyrolean Village lodge where the youth were able to make new friendships, strengthen old ones and have a great time.

On the junior trip, they were fortunate enough to have a privileged visit by Fr. Zareh Zargarian, where he only added to the joyous atmosphere and was able to stimulate an intriguing and compelling discussion among the youth.

The trips were both huge successes, and for that, many thanks go to the Holy Trinity Armenian Church for their support, the Jr. and Sr. ACYOC committees for their hard work, dedication and passion, and to all the youth and their parents who attended. Without one of these necessary elements, the trips would not have had the success that they did.

Anyone who falls into the age category of 14-25 is encouraged to attend. See you next year!
