THANKSGIVING DINNER AT STREETHAVEN WOMEN’S SHELTER-

by Seza Nazarian

Thanksgiving Monday, October 12, 2009

For the third year in a row, members of the Board of Armenian Family Support Services and volunteers gathered at Streethaven Women’s Shelter in downtown Toronto to prepare and serve a delicious Thanksgiving Turkey dinner to over forty women. The staff at the Shelter gave access to the kitchen and offered a tour of the shelter to those who were there for the first time. Decorated tables had been set by the Shelter Staff for the special occasion.  When the meal was ready, the residents were invited to take a seat.

AFSS Volunteers served plates of turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, buttered vegetables, cranberry sauce followed by dessert plates filled with pumpkin and apple pie with whipped cream.

When they finished serving, volunteers sat down at the tables to share a bite with the residents. The atmosphere in the room was festive and light.
It was our wish to show friendship and dignity to all the women and to convey a sense of being at home around the table.

Everyone at the shelter thanked AFSS for once again honouring the annual Thanksgiving Dinner tradition, but most of all it was the volunteers who left with a feeling of inner satisfaction and community spirit.

We would like to thank the Staff of Streethaven Women’s Shelter for allowing us to share Thanksgiving with them once again this year. Thanks as well to Mrs. Sonia Mutevelli for coordinating this event and making this a joyful experience for everyone.

Special thanks to all the Donors, Board Members and Volunteers who took the time from their Thanksgiving Weekend to purchase, prepare, cook, deliver and serve the meal at the Shelter.
