Feast of the Lord’s Presentation to the Temple
On Sunday, February 14th, parents are encouraged to take part in Divine Liturgy with their one year olds or younger children at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church, to be presented and blessed by Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian, the pastor. |
 | Diarn’ndaraj
| On February 14, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Lord’s Presentation to the Temple. Tiarn’ndaraj symbolizes the presentation of the 40 day-old Christ Child to the Temple in Jerusalem.
The infant Christ was brought to the Temple by Mary and Joseph and presented to God. A man named Simeon was there, to whom it had been revealed that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord. Simeon held the infant in his arms, blessed God, and said, “Lord, let your servant now depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your Salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people. A Light to lighten the Gentiles, and the Glory of Your people, Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32)
In the tradition of the Church, Evening Services (Nakhatonak) are conducted on the night preceding the Feast Day. At the conclusion of the service, the priest lights a candle from the Holy Altar, and distributes the flame to all present. With great care, the faithful take the lit candles home to their families.
The morning of the Feast Day, Divine Liturgy is celebrated in Armenian Churches throughout the world. The hymn offered during the Liturgy commemorating Tiarn’ndaraj glorifies Simeon’s articulation of “a Light to lighten the Gentiles”. The hymn praising Simeon also lauds the Mystery of the Incarnation.

Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) serves 3rd annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Women’s Shelter
by Teny Movel, October 2008
On Monday October 6th 2008 I participated to help the Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS) of the Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Toronto with their annual Thanksgiving Dinner mission. This was the third year the AFSS provides a classic turkey dinner to the Street Haven Womens shelter serving over 100 women. Through donations, AFSS volunteers cook the dinner with all its trimmings and bring to the shelter to be served to the homeless or disadvantaged. Each year more and more women attend. This was the first time I volunteered along side many young volunteers and I found this experience very insightful. Read more... |

A Success Story - Newcomer thanks Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS)
In 2007, when I first called Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Toronto, I did not realize how lucky I was to be recommended to the Armenian Family Support Services (AFSS). I was really impressed with the assistance and support they were giving to newcomers. They provided us with full service of settlement starting from welcoming in the airport to helping with moving, furniture, resume writing, employment and so much more, to make us feel welcome and part of the Armenian community in Toronto.
As a newcomer we did not know how to start a new life in Canada. A detailed action plan prepared by Armenian Family Support Services led us to success path. I was referred to ACCESS, an employment agency by AFSS and that helped me a lot in my job search efforts. I managed to find a job through job-connect program and my story was accepted as a success story. I was invited to celebrate this event and share my experience at “Walk of Fame” event at ACCESS downtown location. I was really happy to share my success story with others and have AFSS diligent members Maida Icliates and Rita Odjaghian present in that evening.
I’m very proud and admire all the AFSS members. They are doing magic work which one must express deepest respect to all of them.

Meeting Rakel Dink - October 29, 2008
On Wednesday, October 29, 2008 the pastor, Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian, Rev. Archpriest Sarkis Gulyan, the office staff and volunteers present at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church were excited and happy to have Mrs. Rakel Dink who came to visit us during the day, just hours before her public appearance for a lecture at the church “Magaros Artinian” hall scheduled to take place in the same evening.
After shaking hands and greeting Mrs. Dink, Fr. Zareh invited all present to take part in a prayer for the departed soul of late Hrant Dink. |
 | Having her with us right there, praying and thinking about everything she and her family have been through was emotional and intimate.
We were all impressed by the strong faith of Rakel Dink who after all praises our Lord, believing strongly that Hrant got his final rest and peace embraced by God in his eternal life.
Mrs. Dink was moved to learn about the memorial days organized at Holy Trinity in honor of Mr. Dink’s passing and his first year anniversary. Also in his memory, the “Pokrig Pem” Theater Group of Holy Trinity Armenian Church was renamed to “Hrant Dink Pokrig Pem”.
These are only small ways to keep Hrant Dink’s memory alive but most important is for every Armenian to follow his legacy even in the most challenging times and not to surrender under any circumstances. As she mentioned during her speech in the evening, “In Turkey it is difficult to stand up for justice and equality, even more difficult if you are an Armenian in Turkey and trying to do that. Our best wishes and prayers go to the Dink family and their friends in Turkey.

ANNUAL BAZAAR – 2008
Organized by Holy Trinity Armenian Church - Women's Guild
One of the surest signs of the warmth and joyous gathering is the Annual Bazaar at Holy Trinity Armenian Church which was held on Sunday, November 9 at “Magaros Artinian” Hall.
This year’s Bazaar was unique because of the presence of a special guest – His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanian - the Primate of the Armenian Church of Republic of Georgia who was invited to Canada on the occasion of a Charitable Art Exhibition & Sale of Armenian Artists from Georgia which originally took place on the last weekend of October; the paintings were on display in “Maral Ishkanian” hall during our bazaar.
This year’s bazaar featured a much bigger bake table, where one could buy homemade confections. A delicious mouthwatering lunch was available too. As usual, the lunch line was long, but well worth the wait!!!
There were several other attractions including vendors selling their high quality products: silver and gold jewelry, stylish accessories, “AWI” watches and craft items, souvenirs from Armenia and much more.
Finally thank you to our Women’s Guild Executive Committee members and all devoted volunteers who worked hard and diligently to make this year’s Bazaar a great success!!!

Bible Exploration Group gave a helping hand at Children’s Aid Society... By: Talin Orfali On Wednesday November 12, 2008, twelve members of Holy Trinity Armenian Church Bible Study Group volunteered at the Children’s Aid Society to help out with Christmas Gift Wrapping. We met with Krista who gave us instructions and we started our work by sorting out the number of children in each family, their age and gender. There were 2 separate rooms full of toys for the girls and the boys. The evening was a great success and I thank everyone who came out and assisted. |

| We all had a great time knowing that we made a difference in the lives of less fortunate children and their families particularly in the Toronto area. When those children open up their gifts on Christmas morning, I am sure they will be happy and smiling that they have toys to play with and to enjoy everyday. This was our second time participating at the Children’s Aid Gift Wrapping Drive. It was great to work together for a great cause and have fun at the same time after which we celebrated our hard work at The Armenian Kitchen where we enjoyed delicious Armenian dishes. We ended off the evening with happy faces as we all went home. We will be back at Children’s aid next year to volunteer again.

St. Sarkis the Warrior and His Son, St. Mardiros
The feast day honoring St. Sarkis is movable. It occurs between January 11th and February 15th. Each year it follows the five-day Fast of Catechumens.
Sarkis was a Greek from the area of Cappadocia on the Anatolian plain. He was a proud, brave Christian and served as a Roman army officer during the reign of Emperor Constantine (roughly 337 A.D.). Sarkis' valor, strength, and bravery earned him the rank of general.
Sarkis used his position of power for spiritual growth, going from town to town purging the land of pagan idols, teaching the Gospel, and building churches where pagan temples once stood. Sarkis had a good model in the piety of the Emperor Constantine. Read more... |

The prayer week celebrating the Church Unity took place on the week of January 17 – 25, 2009 in Toronto.
Deacon Nurhan Ipek was present at the closing prayer on January 25th which took place at York Minister Park Baptist Church to represent the Holy Trinity Armenian Church.
He was honored to read the following Scripture from the Old Testament by the request of Rev. Dr. J. Peter Holmes.
The Prophecy concerning the Reunion of Judah and Israel |
 | [15] The word of the Lord came tome:
[16] Mortal. Take a stickand write upon it, “For Judah, and the Israelities associated with it”; then take another stick and write on it, “For Joseph (the stick of Ephraim) and all the house of Israel associated with it”.
[17] And join them together into one stick, so that they may become ONE in your hand.

The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord
On February 14 each year, the Armenian Church celebrates Dyarnuntarach, literally "the bringing forward of the Lord." The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord to the Temple is always 40 days after Armenian Christmas. Other names for the feast include Derendas (possibly a contraction of Dyarnuntarach) and Candlemas.
When Mary and Joseph took the baby Jesus to the temple, Mary was seen by Simeon, an elderly and devoutly religious Jew who had prayed to God to keep him alive so he would see the Saviour promised to mankind. When he saw Mary and her baby, Simeon suddenly sensed God's presence, and said: "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel." (Luke 2:29-32) |
 | Armenian Traditions for The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord
The night before the feast, Armenians traditionally light candles during an evening church service, carrying the flame out into the darkness (symbolically bringing light into the void) and either take it home to light lamps or light a bonfire in the church courtyard.
Combining pre-Christian Armenian traditions with this Christian celebration, the festivities included dancing and as the celebration grew, young men would leap over the fire.

Beside Still Waters: Day by Day Through Lent
Written By: Albert A. Keshgegian |
 | Albert A. Keshgegian, a deacon at Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Pennsylvania, writes: “Great Lent is an opportunity to strengthen our relationship with God […] Lent is a time to turn to the Lord”.
The namesake of the library, Mario Gumushdjian, taught Bible studies on Wednesday evenings to young adults before his passing. One of his most memorable assertions was that, when we miss out on an opportunity to do God’s Will in our lives, God presents us with another to make up for the one we lost; and in that, as children of God, we may see His glory in our lives when we follow Him. After a delicious lunch, the afternoon programs focused on games and water activities. While one group of campers headed out to beautiful Sandbanks Provincial Park, another group could be found at the Wesley Acres waterfront swimming, canoeing, and even snorkeling! |

THE 18TH ANNIVERSARY OF ARMENIA’S INDEPENDENCE
Monday, September 21, marked the 18th anniversary of the establishment of the independent Republic of Armenia. For this occasion, Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Canada, has advised parish priests of the Armenian Church Canadian Diocese to conduct the special thanksgiving prayer and the blessing of the flag ceremony for the Republic of Armenia.
Armenia declared its sovereignty from the Soviet Union on August 23, 1990. In the wake of the August Coup, a referendum was held on the question of secession. Following an overwhelming vote in favour, full independence was declared on September 21, 1991. However, widespread recognition did not occur until the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991. Armenia became a member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992.
On Sunday, September 20th, 2009, following the Divine Liturgy, a special flag-blessing ceremony took place at Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church on the occasion of 18th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia.
Our beautiful tricolor flag was carried to the altar by six students representing AGBU Zaroukian Armenian Day School, Holy Trinity Church Sunday School and St. Sahag St. Mesrop Armenian Saturday School. |
 | A group of cheerful Sunday School students waved small flags adding a cheerful sight to the ceremony.
Our Pastor and parishioners were honoured to have a special guest amongst them. A Lebanese Member of Parliament from Beirut, Honorable Shant Chinchinian, was present during the Divine Liturgy and was asked to come forward to receive a special blessing and the Holy Trinity Armenian Church Medal from Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian.
 | On behalf of the Pastor, parish council and parishioners of Holy Trinity, we wish Mr. Chinchinian the best of success in his important and challenging duties, including representing the large Armenian diasporan community of Beirut.

May God bless our cultural and spiritual homeland
and keep our people safe.
O Lord our God, listen to the voice of supplications of your servants and keep unshaken the Republic of Armenia, which you restored through the grace of your mercy.
Hold out your most generous merciful hand and bless our entire people, namely the Armenian nation, and the Armenian Church, so that a spirit of love, peace, understanding, and divine worship would rest upon them. |

Pilgrimage to Jerusalem – Summer of 2009
By Ari Boyaci
There are two places in the world that I believe every Armenian must visit at least once in their lifetime, if possible. The first place we think about is of course our National Motherland of Armenia and the Holy See of Etchmiazin, but we often forget about our Spiritual Motherland – the Holy Land of Jerusalem.
This summer I was able to fulfil my dream of visiting the Holy Land of Jerusalem for the first time. Visiting Jerusalem as a pilgrim from the Armenian Apostolic Church is truly a blessing, knowing that a quarter of the historic Old City belongs to the Armenians and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem; by de-facto it’s considered as “Little Armenia”. Everywhere you go in the Armenian Quarter, you see people speaking in Armenian. The Quarter is currently home to about 1000 Armenians including clergy and seminarians. Read more... |

ACTION ALERT:
Religious equality and freedom of consciousness in the Republic of Georgia
Dear friends,
The Diocese of the Armenian Church of Canada has learned of the collapse of the Armenian Church of St. Gevork of Mughni in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. Saint Gevork Church dating to 1356, collapsed as a direct result of a lack of maintenance by the government of Georgia.
During Soviet times, churches became the property of the state and the St. Gevork, Armenian Church was used as a museum during which time its physical condition was left to deteriorate. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and with the coming independence of the Republic of Georgia, the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, together with other religious minorities, has not received legal status. Consequently all Armenian churches in Georgia currently carry on under the jurisdiction of the Georgian Orthodox Church, without legal rights to safeguard their properties. Read more...

Youth Representatives from Can-Arm Diocese participate in the 4th Annual Pan-North American Retreat in Chicago, IL
The 4th Annual Pan-North American Retreat was held this year in Chicago, Illinois. The retreat consisted of youth from all across the United States—from the Eastern and Western Dioceses—who were all eager to participate in a spiritual, yet fun-filled weekend. From the Canadian Diocese, a group of enthusiastic youth embarked on the lengthy journey to Chicago. Even though one of the participants from Toronto realized that he had forgot his passport at home, an hour into the trip, the group still made it peacefully and punctually to the Techny Towers Retreat Centre in northern Chicago. Upon arriving, you could not help but to notice the exciting energy radiating from the youth there. Walking into a foreign place and meeting a large group of people for the first time may be intimidating for most, but this was not the case at PNAR.
All of the participants embraced each other as if they were their own brother or sister; after five minutes of just idly chit-chatting you felt the feeling that you had been friends forever. |
The daily programmes, headed by Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, were at the very least educational and spiritually enriching. Youth were engaged in all the topics discussed and the evidence of this was the active participation and passion that penetrated all the discussions. The youth were privileged to receive testimonials and have one-on-one interaction with clergy, seminarians and even each other. Overall, the weekend was a phenomenal experience for every single attendee. The spiritual lessons learned and unforgettable friendships created throughout the short, two-day stay indeed will stay with each and every participant for the rest of their lives. For most, this trip was said to be "epic" and "life-changing". |
Truly, the work of God was visible throughout the weekend because of the fellowship, the collective worship, and overall spiritual dynamic that was unceasingly present.
Special thanks to Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, Nancy Basmajian, the ACYO Central Councils, and all the parents and youth that worked behind the scenes to make this weekend as unforgettable and invaluable as it was. (by; Saro Khatchadourian)

Feast of Transfiguration of our Lord - June 29, 2008
THIS SUNDAY, the Armenian Holy Apostolic Church marks the feast of Christ's appearance with a resplendent countenance to three of His disciples, Peter, John, and James, on the holy mountain of Galilee, also known as Mount Tabor. Referred to also as Baydzaragerbootiun, the Feast of Transfiguration is one of the five principal feasts (Daghavar) of the Armenian Church, so named because of Christ's luminous appearance.
In Armenia it is also known as Vartavar (the Festival of Roses) after the old pagan feast, which it replaced. |
