Students Visit Seniors on the Occasion of New Year

On Saturday, January 14th, 2012, the Grade 6 class of St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School visited the Armenian seniors at the Leslie Senior Citizens Home led by Rev. Fr. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian, the school’s principal Mr. Yetvart Balian and classroom teacher Mrs. Seta Tchakerian-MacLennan. As customarily done, Rev. Fr. Zareh Zargarian began the visit by blessing the senior’s home.  Upon completing the blessing he announced that  “Christ is born and revealed!  Blessed is the Revelation of Christ!”.  The students joined Fr. Zareh in singing the hymn “Der Voghormia” and others.

Also present at the visitation were former alumni students of whom, Miss Sareen Kardjian performed on the piano as did Grade 6 students, Andrew Schmittat, Daniella Ekmekjian and Krikor Antabli on the guitar.  Following the performances, the students presented each senior with a handmade craft to mark the occasion of Christmas.  The seniors were very pleased with the performances and appreciated the youth presence and thoughtfulness. On behalf of the parent council, Mrs. Rita Bedirian rose to the occasion by personally preparing a delicious traditional Armenian meal of “Mante”.   Following the heartfelt and sincere appreciation by the seniors the students returned to the school  with a sense of fulfillment and a better understanding of the value of “giving” as they accomplished with such humbleness. The school’s principal, Mr. Yetvart Balian spoke to the students as to how well they represented St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School and how proud he is of each and every one of them.  Mr. Balian especially thanked Mrs. Seta Tchakerian-MacLennan for her endless devotion to the school and her students and for facilitating the art project presented to the seniors. Despite the modest and humble nature of this event, the happiness and everlasting memories it created for our Armenian seniors made it all worthwhile thanks to our student’s exemplary behavior and enthusiasm.

A “Handes” dedicated to Armenian Alphabet

Ani class of St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School was full of enthusiasm and anticipation on November 19, 2011. The classroom was decorated with Armenian Letters as well as Mesrop Mashtots’s picture. The Principal of the school Mr. Yetvart Balian and the Vice Principal, Ms. Ashkhen Malkhasian attended the event. The parents were excited to see their children dressed up in white shirts with Armenian letters attached to the shirts and bells in their hands.

The students prepared “Handes” dedicated to Armenian Alphabet with their teachers Ms. Marieta Gasparian and Armine Zilfugharyan. This event has become a tradition for this class over years. They finished studying Armenian Alphabet, their first Armenian book, and now are able to read and write in Armenian. The teacher Ms. Marieta Gasparian presented an inclusive speech on the meaning and the purpose of this event. Looking back at Armenian history, the teacher indicated that Armenia did not have its own writing system and was divided between two powerful empires, namely the Roman Empire and Persia in the year of 387. The country was on the edge of losing its state system, the language and the religion, and the creation of Armenian Alphabet became vital under these circumstances. This fact was well realised by Sahak Partev, Mesrop Mashtots as well as king Vramshapooh.

After years of hard work, in the year of 405, Mesrop Mashtots returned from Yedesia bringing Armenian Alphabet ready for use. Immediately after this the Bible was translated into Armenian, the history of the country was presented in Armenian. In addition, many schools were opened in different parts of the country to teach people to read and write in Armenian.

The invention of Armenian writing system rescued the nation from extinction and Armenians express their gratitude to Sahak Partev, Mesrop Mashtots and all others on the Culture Day celebrated every year in October.

Grade 2 students of Ani class also expressed their thankfulness by preparing this event. They presented poems about Mashtots and the Armenian Language. At the end of the event, each student promised to keep our language and pass it to the coming generations.

Both the students and the parents were full of enthusiasm and excitement.

At the end, the principal addressed the students and the parents in his speech and distributed Certificates to Grade 2 Ani students.

A concert for St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School’s Students

On November 26 a concert for St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School’s Nursery, JK, SK, grades 1 and 2 as well as for Ani Class students took place. Robert and Frank Petizians came to the school to entertain the students with their talent, festive songs and music. At 12 o’clock the teachers led the excited children to the Holy Trinity Armenian  Apostolic Church building lower level  where the event was going to take place.

The initiator of the event, the principal of the school Mr. Yetvart Balian greeted the students and introduced the talented guests. Petizian brothers performed a number of cheerful songs, such as “38 Letters”, “Lorik”, “Our school” and many others. The students were in a great mood, the hall was full of children’s laughter and continuous applause.

It is important to mention the fact that children had their special role in the concert not only as spectators but also as active participants. The relevance of the lyrics and the music let the students sing together with Petizian brothers and become a part of the performance. The educational nature of the concert is also undeniable.

At the end of the event, the principal thanked Robert and Frank Petizians and expressed a desire to host them at St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School soon again.

Համերգ՝ կազմակերպուած Ս. Սահակ-Ս. Մեսրոպ Շաբաթօեայ Վարժարանի աշակերտներու համար

Շաբաթ, 26 Նոյեմբեր 2011-ին Ս. Երրորդութիւն Հայաստանեայց Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյ ներքնասրահին մէջ տեղի ունեցաւ համերգ՝ կազմակերպուած Ս. Սահակ-Ս. Մեսրոպ Շաբաթօեայ Վարժարանի Ծաղիկ,Առաջին, Երկրորդ եւ Անի դասարաններու աշակերտներու համար: Դպրոց այցելած էին  Ռոբերտ և Ֆրէնք Փեթիզեանները, որպէսզի իրենց տաղանդով, ուրախ երգերով և երաժշտութեամբ զուարճացնեն փոքրիկներուն, որոնք առտուընէ անհամբեր կը սպասէին անոնց ժամանելուն: Եւ ահա ժամը 12-ին աշակերտները իրենց ուսուցչուհիներու հետ հաւաքուեցան եկեղեցւոյ ներքնասրահին մէջ: Ներկայ էր նաև իրադարձութեան նախաձեռնողը՝ դպրոցի տնօրէն Պարոն Եդուարդ Պալեան: Ան ողջունեց հաւաքուածներուն և ներկայացուց տաղանդաշատ հիւրերուն: Փեթիզեան եղբայրները կատարեցին շարք մը երգեր, ինչպէս «38 տառ», «Լորիկը», «Մեր Դպրոցը» և այլն: Կը տիրէր բարձր տրամադրութիւն, սրահը լի էր երեխաներու խինդ ու ծիծաղով, անընդմէջ ծափահարութիւններով:

Կարևոր է յիշատակել այն փաստը, որ Փեթիզեան եղբայրներու ներկայացուցած ծրագրին մէջ փոքրիկներն ունէին իրենց ուրոյն տեղը ոչ միայն որպէս հանդիսատեսներ, այլ նաեւ որպէս աշխոյժ մասնակիցներ: Երգերու՝ տարիքին համապատասխան մատչելիութիւնը և մեղեդայնութիւնը առիթ կու տար աշակերտներուն ձայնակցիլ երգչին՝ ըլլալով ներկայացման անբաժանելի մասը: Անհերքելի է նաև ծրագրի կրթական և դաստիարակչական բնոյթը:

Համերգի աւարտին տնօրէնը շնորհակալութիւն յայտնեց Ռոբերտ և Ֆրէնք Փեթիզեաններուն և ցանկութիւն յայտնեց նորէն տեսնելու զիրենք Ս. Սահակ-Ս. Մեսրոպ Ազգային Շաբաթօեայ Վարժարանէն ներս:

Willowgrove Farm Excursion

On October 29, 2011, St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School’s grades 3, 4 and 5 students made their way to Willowgrove Farm for a day of pumpkin picking.

The excursion started at the pumpkin station.  Students learned firsthand the various characteristics of pumpkins and saw how and where they were grown.  They showed students pumpkin seeds, which several students recognized as the same ones their parents snack on.   The day progressed with several mini experiments; weighing an assortment of pumpkins and testing whether or not they will float in a barrel of water.

Next, students were led out into the pumpkin fields. Each class chose a pumpkin and a scare crow to take back and the remainder of the time was spent touring the farm grounds.

The final station was a craft centre.  There, students learned to build pumpkin bird feeders, which students took home.

Students, teachers, volunteers and Willowgrove staff were extremely pleased with this excursion.  A special thanks goes out to everyone who was involved in organizing this trip.

First Day of 2011-12 School Year at St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School and Armenian Independence Day Anniversary

            On the morning of September 17, 2011, the school gymnasium was brimming with students, teachers, parents, principal, board members and alumni. 

            The morning started with the singing of both Canadian and Armenian national anthems followed by the school anthem and prayer.  Principal Yetvart Balian delivered his welcoming speech wishing everyone a successful school year.  He, then, invited Reverend Arch. Father Zareh Zargarian to pass on his blessings, acknowledge the teachers and wish everyone good luck for the 2011-12 academic year.  After the morning ceremony, students were escorted to their classrooms and the school year commenced. 

            The following week, on September 24, 2011, St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School celebrated Armenia’s Independence Day 20^th anniversary.  Everyone gathered outside, in front of the genocide memorial statue with Armenian flags and sang the National Anthem after which red, blue and orange balloons were released into the sky.  The celebration continued with music, dance, food and face-painting for kids. 

            A special thanks goes out to the Parent’s Council who organized this successful event, along with past alumni.

Այցելութիւն մը “Willowgrove” Բացօդեայ
Ուսումնական Կեդրոնին

Սուրբ Երրորդութիւն Հայաստանեայց Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյ՝ Սուրբ Սահակ – Սուրբ Մեսրոպ Ազգային Շաբաթօրեայ Վարժարանի՝ 3-րդ, 4-րդ, 5-րդ և Անի դասարաններու աշակերտութիւնը այցելեցին “Willowgrove” Կեդրոնը, ընկերակցութեամբ դաստիարակներուն, օգնականներուն և կամաւոր ծնողներու: Այս կեդրոնը ուսումնական իննըսուն վայրկեան տեւողութեամբ ծրագիր մըն է որ կը գործադրէ: Մեզ բաժնեցին երկու խումբերու, ու մեզի ընկերացան իրենց ղեկավար առաջնորդներ:

Առաջին կայանը դդումներու սենեակն էր: Սկսան ներկայացնել դդումին կեանքի օղակը: Մեզի ցոյց տուին կուտերը, (ու բոլորս ալ աշակերտէ մը տեղեկացանք որ իր ծնողները ամէն երեկոյ այդ կուտերէն ուտելով կը զբաղուէին): Պատմեցին թէ կուտը ցանելէ ետք փոքր թուփ մը կը ծլի հողէն դուրս, ու հասան ծաղիկներուն՝ օրինակներ ցոյց տալով ներկաներուն: Մօտեցանք ջուրով լեցուած ապակիէ հսկայ կաթսայի մը: Երեք տարբեր չափերու դդումներ բերին, աշակերտներու օգնութեամբ կշռեցին, ու հարցուցին թէ դդումները երբ կաթսային մէջ նետենք,  ջուրին վրայ պիտի ծփա՞ն. թէ ջուրին յատակը պիտի իջնեն: Բոլորին զարմացուց փորձին արդիւնքը՝ երբ թեթեւն ու ծանրը՝ ջուրին երեսը մնացին:

Երկրորդ մասը այցելութիւն մըն էր դդումներու դաշտը: Իւրաքանչիւր դասարան դդում մը զատեց ու բոլորը միասին կառքի մը վրայ նստած պտտեցան ագարակին շուրջ ծանօթանալով կարգ մը կենդանիներու, որոնք կ'արածէին խոտերուն վրայ: Վերջին կայանը ձեռային աշխատանքի սենեակն էր, ուր խրտուիլակ կազմել սորվեցան աշակերտներն ու իրենց ընկերացողները:

Գնահատական խօսքեր լսեցինք մեր աշակերտներու վարքին ու վարմունքին մասին ու մեզ ճամբեցին մէկական փոքրիկ դդումներ ու մեր կազմած խրտուիլակները մեզի նուիրելով: Մանրակրկիտ խնամքով պատրաստուած շատ հաճելի պտոյտ մըն էր թէ աշակերտութեան և թէ իրենց ընկերակցող պատասխանատուներուն համար, որուն յաջողութիւնը կը պարտինք Ծնողաց Յանձնախումբի ժրաջան անդամներուն:

Անկախութեան Տարեդարձը

Շաբաթ 17 Սեպտեմբերի առաւօտեան ժամը 9:30-ին խուռներամ բազմութիւն մը ներկայ էր վարժարանի մարզասրահին մէջ:

Հոն էին ուսանողները իրենց տարազներով, Սբ. Երրորդութիւն Հայաստանեայց Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյ Հովիւ՝ Արժանապատիւ Տէր Զարեհ Աւագ Քահանայ Զարգարեանը, ծխական խորհուրդի ներկայացուցիչներ, խնամակալ մարմնի անդամներ, տնօրէնութիւն և ուսուցչական կազմ, ծնողաց օժանդակ մարմնի անդամ-անդամուհիներ, շրջանաւարտներ և հետաքրքրուած ազգայիններ:

Ըստ վարժարանի ամենօրեայ սովորութեան՝ Գանատական, Հայաստանի Հանրապետութեան, ու վարժարանիս օրհներգներէն, ինչպէս նաեւ Տէրունական աղօթքէն ետք, տնօրէն պր. Եդուարդ Պալեան բարեգալուստ մաղթեց ու ներկայացուց վարժարանի բարելաւման նպաստող ծրագիրներու շարք մը: Ապա հրաւիրեց Տէր Զարեհը իր օրհնութիւնները փոխանցելու:

Տէր հայրը իր քաջալերական խոսքերէն եւ ուսուցչական կազմը ներկայացնելէ ետք խմբային ծափահարութեամբ բարեգալուստ մաղթեց վարժարանիս նոր աշակերտներուն ու յաջողութիւն մաղթեց բոլորին:

Ուսուցչուհիները իրենց աշակերտները առաջնորդեցին դէպի դասարանները, որոնց բարեզարդման համար շնորհաւորելի են նախկին տարուայ շրջանաւարտները, որոնք երախտագիտական իրենց զգացումները արտայայտելով, ընդառաջած էին տնօրէն պր. Պալեանի անձնական հրաւէրին:

 Շաբաթ, 24 Սեպտեմբերը, Հայաստանի Հանրապետութեան՝ Անկախութեան Հռչակման 20րդ տարեդարձի տօնակատարութեան օրն էր:

Աշակերտութիւնը առաւօտեան իրենց դասերը աւելի կանուխ աւարտելով, խմբուեցան շրջափակին մէջ կանգնած Ցեղասպանութեան Յուշարձանին շուրջ, իւրաքանչիւր աշակերտ իրենց ձեռքերուն մէջ վեր բարձրացուցած հայրենի Կարմիր-Կապոյտ-ծիրանագոյն դրօշակները: Յուշարձանի շրջաբակը զարդարուած էր փուչիկներով, հսկայ կարկանդակներու և զովացուցիչներու սեղաններով, որոնց ներկայանելիութիւնն ու պատրաստութեան բծախնդրութիւնը ուշադրութեան կ'արժանանար:

Տէր Զարեհ աւագ քահանայի և պր. տնօրէնի հայրենասիրական խրախուսիչ արտայայտութիւններէն ետք երգուեցաւ Հայաստանի Հանրապետութեան Օրհներգը, ու դէպի երկինք ազատ արձակեցին երագոյն փուչիկներ, ոմանց կպցուած Հայրենի դրօշակները:

Ուրախութիւն արտայայտելու պահն էր, կարկանդակները կտրելու, մաղթանքներ ղրկելու հայրենի ժողովուրդին, երգելու, պարելու, վազվզելու, ցատկրտելու:

Շնորհաւորելի է ծնողաց օժանդակ յանձնախումբի անդամ-անդամուհիներու աշխատանքը, ինչպէս նաեւ նախկին տարուայ շրջանաւարտներու ներկայութիւնն ու օժանդակութիւնը, որոնք  կրկին ընդառաջած էին տնօրէն պր. Պալեանի հրաւէրին խանդավառելով օրուայ հանդիսութիւնը:

St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School’s
Kindergarten Year-End Concert

On Saturday, June 4^th, St. Sahag St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School’s year-end concert took place. The hall was brimming with parents, relatives and friends anxiously waiting for the show to begin.  Also present were Holy Trinity Apostolic Church’s Rev. Archpriest Father Zareh Zargarian, all members of the school committee, along with past and present principals, teachers and former graduates.

The stage curtains opened unveiling the striking backdrop prepared by Mrs. Seta McLennan.  The stage was decorated with images of the Armenian alphabet and flag, Mesrob Mashdotz and the school crest. 

After singing the Canadian, Armenian and school anthems the students performed a series of songs prepared by Mrs. Hripsime Demirjian.   The work she put forth is truly commendable.  

The emcee for the evening, Vice Principal Mrs. Ashkhen Malkhassian, invited to the stage Principal Yetvart Balian to deliver his welcoming speech.  He greeted everyone and acknowledged the former principals for all their efforts and devotion in helping to get St. Sahag St. Mesrob Saturday School where it is today.  He thanked the Vice Principal, teachers and volunteers for helping him transition smoothly into his role as newly appointed Principal.  He applauded all the parents for devoting their Saturdays to bringing their children to this school and granting them the opportunity to learn the Armenian language and experience its culture. 

The program continued with the Junior and Senior Kindergarten presentation of the Armenian alphabet.  The Grade 1 class recited Khachig Tashdents’ “Mesrob Mashdotz” and performed a Children’s dance.  The Grade 2 class recited “Darvan Yeghanagner.”  Both Grade 3 and Ani classes performed a group dance, “Dzaghgir intz Hamar.”   The Grade 5’s also performed a group dance, “Shalakho.”  The Grade 6 class presented “Askapanyah.”  A special thank you to Ms. Shogher Menengichian for all her work in preparing the dances.

The evening continued with Mrs. Sona Kevork’s, Chair of the Board of Trustees, address.  She congratulated all the students for a successful year and commended Mr. Yetvart Balian for accepting the role of principal wishing him all the best in the future.   

The program continued with the “Ani” class’ presentation of “Hatz Mer Hanabazorya.”  This was followed by the Grade 4 group dance, “Sartarabad.”  The Grade 7 class recited Avetik Isahakyan’s “Araguh.”  After the performances, Principal Balian and Mrs. and Ms. Zabounian were called to the stage to present the school medal to the student with the highest academic achievement. 

Principal Balian invited Rev. Archpriest Father Zareh Zargarian to the stage for his closing remarks.  He congratulated everyone for a successful school year and commended Principal Balian for all his hard work throughout the year.  The evening ceremonies closed with the entire student body singing “Garmir Gabuiyd Dziranakuyn.”
